Regular Maintenance is Essential
TIMBER decks need regular maintenance to provide protection from the harsh Queensland weather.
To start, add some detergent to a bucket of warm water or mix 500ml of bleach in 10 litres of water. Pour the solution onto the deck and scrub with a stiff broom or a large scrubbing brush. Applying a stronger mixture of bleach or deck-cleaning solution can help get rid of stubborn stains.
Once clean, it is a good opportunity to repair or replace boards which have deteriorated. Use a sander to smooth rough spots.
Oiling the deck seals it against the damaging effects of UV rays, which can dry it out and cause boards to shrink or crack. Choose water-based decking oil with UV protection. These are easily to apply, dry quickly and can protect against mould and fungus. A roller tray will make the job easier. Using an oil applicator, roller or large brush, apply the oil to all areas of the deck. Then let it dry.
Staining your deck can give it a lustrous, consistent look while adding colour which will highlight the natural timber grain. Proper cleaning of deck timber is essential to ensure a good finish.
