10 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Street Appeal

10 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Street Appeal

It’s important that the first impression of your home that visitors, family and even potential buyers have is a positive one.

Here are ten things you can do to ensure your house stands out for all the right reasons.

1. Front fence

Adding an attractive fence at the front of your property can add value to your home by making it look bigger.  A fence can also provide increased security for children and pets. A local carpenter or landscaper should be able to build a picket fence in a day.

2. Spray the bricks

One of the best ways to transform an ugly brick exterior is to spray the bricks a different colour. You don’t need to render a brick house to modernise it and add value, as this can be costly and time-consuming. Spraying the bricks is faster, cheaper and it looks great when done properly.

3. Turf

If you can increase the amount of green grass out the front of your house, it will look more appealing. Sometimes you may need to clear away some dead or dying bushes, but the end result will look better with a neat patch of turf out front.

4. Stepping stones

There’s nothing worse than standing outside a house, not knowing how to get to the front door. Well-placed stepping stones are the perfect way to help guide your visitors, plus these beauties can protect the front lawn from increased foot traffic.

5. House number

When visitors can’t find the number of a house, it’s not a good look. Make sure your letterbox is sturdy (or at least upright) and with a clear number displayed on it. You can also add a street number on the façade of your house under a spotlight, which can look effective.

6. New tiles on front porch

Whilst not all front porches are clearly visible from the street, this is one of the first areas of the house your visitors will encounter. Many porches were tiled when the house was first built.  Consider updating this area with new tiles.

7. Front door

Front doors should be considered fast fashion and there’s no reason why the colour can’t be regularly changed. A fresh-looking front door, particularly if it’s a coloured one, can help a house stand out from the crowd.

8. Plants

A house always looks better with some plants out the front and whilst mature plants would be an ideal choice, they’re often too expensive.
But even young shrubs are worth investing in because they give a fresh look to the front of a house and they will grow over time.

9. Balustrade

It’s amazing how much better a property can look with a nice new balustrade. It adds bulk and a contrast to the front of a house plus it doesn’t have to cost a lot. White timber balustrades are fast to build (and paint) and this option can be more affordable than glass.

10. Spray the roof

It’s easy to overlook a tired-looking roof but a fresh coat of paint on the roof can make a big difference. As this can be a dangerous task and requires some specialist work, it’s best to hire a professional for this task.
