4 Easy Weekend Jobs To Prepare For A Spring Auction

It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to moving home. But if you need to sell before you buy, you’ll have to get your own property looking its best first.

The days are getting longer and warmer, so there are more hours on the weekend to tackle the jobs you might’ve put off during winter. Now is the ideal time to give your home a facelift – especially if you want to make the most of the spring auctions.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on materials and equipment or injure yourself getting everything done, either. Hiring the right tools can make each job easier, quicker and create a more professional finish.

“Spring is the time when people look at doing up the home and selling,” says Tony Symons, general manager of product and procurement at Kennards Hire.

“It’s amazing how a few simple jobs can make a big difference to how a home looks.”

1. Remove old wallpaper

You might have loved that floral or embossed wallpaper when you put it up years ago, or maybe you bought your home and inherited some ‘interesting’ wall decals that you never got round to removing. If you’re getting ready for auction, now’s the time to strip back wallpaper that dates your rooms or makes them look cluttered or small.

“The traditional method of removing wallpaper with a scraper can take ages, but a wallpaper steamer takes the effort out of the job,” says Tony.

However, a wallpaper steamer is not something you need to invest in buying because, really, how often are you going to use it? Kennards Hire’s easy-to-use electric steamer has a heating element that produces steam which then dissolves and loosens wallpaper adhesive, so it can be removed easily.

2. Refresh the paintwork

Nothing lifts the look of a room like a fresh coat of paint. You can change the whole vibe of key rooms in your home by updating the walls, skirts, window frames and doors. If you are re-painting with a view to going to auction, choose classic neutrals that suit all manner of tastes. Get the job done more quickly by hiring an airless sprayer – a handheld model is ideal for small interior and exterior projects.

“People can put off painting because it can be a monotonous and time-consuming job, but an airless sprayer helps you get the job done with less effort,” says Tony. “You’ll be impressed by the results.”

3. Sand the floors

If you’re in an older property with carpet or vinyl, pull up those coverings to reveal the wooden floorboards underneath. Few home features are more coveted by buyers than original timber floorboards.

Sand them back and instantly add to the appeal of your home. Wooden floors are classic and a lot of potential buyers prefer wooden floors because they attract less dust and are a better option for anyone with allergies. A timber floor sander and edger will help you get the results you want.

“You can also use a sander if your timber deck looks a bit tired – sand it back and then re-stain it,” Tony says. “You can get the job done in a weekend. You’ll get a great sense of satisfaction when friends and family visit and comment on how good it looks.”

4. Deep clean outdoor areas

Outdoor areas looking a little worse for wear post-winter? Months of dirt, dust, grease and garden debris can build up and leave stubborn stains that are hard to clean with an ordinary hose. The solution? Spring clean paved and concreted outdoor areas, brick paving, driveways, outdoor entertaining and barbecue areas, and the paving around your pool.

“A high-pressure washer is easy to use and the blasting mechanism removes ingrained stains and gives outdoor areas an instant freshen-up,” says Tony.

Feeling inspired? Get all of these jobs done by making the most of two days’ hire for the price of one at Kennards Hire – available every weekend until 5th October 2020.
